CONCLUSION AND
ACTION PLAN

For the E-Service Learning (SL) as our assignment for this subject, firstly we are required to form group members of six person. I decided to team up with Adibah, Deanna, Najmal, Fatihah, and Nurin. We then was brief by our lecturer, Dr Ain Husna on how to conduct the SL and overall there are five stages to be completed. We were suggested to use website or any suitable platform to make e-portfolio as a means of recording the whole tasks. As for stage 1 which is the investigation stage, my group mates and I decided to make a survey to collect information from the public people. Adibah and I drafted the questionnaires on the google form and shared the link with Dr. Ain Husna to be checked for approval before sharing it to the public. Once it is approved, we distributed the link to the questionnaires together with its caption. We managed to get 41 people to respond to our survey. We then studied the respondents and make a report on what we have found based on the survey. We also was required to make a proposal to the lecturer on our area of studies and the program that we would like to conduct in the future. After thorough brainstorming, we decided to hold a coffee talk session only between the speaker and our group members. We plan to record the video and post it online and share to the public for awareness. Since the Dr. Ain Husna agreed with our plan, we proceed by searching for the speakers/panellist on LinkedIn. We then approached Mr. Gurbinder Singh Gill, who is a mediator to share his experience with us. Since he agreed, we then sent the official letter from UUM. Our program was held successfully for 45 minutes with the speaker on the topic of Mediation on Landlord and Tenant Disputes. We then posted it on youtube and shared it to public to collect feedbacks. We received amazing feedbacks from the viewers and had written a report on it in our portfolio.

At first when I was excited when briefed on the service learning program. This is because, I believe it is a great way or a new way for us to study and gain knowledge as it is different from the usual method used for assignments. I was also happy as this service learning encourages us to engage with the community just like a charity as we conducted program and shared knowledge to community as an awareness. Nevertheless, to making surveys, conducting program, and collecting feedbacks makes me feel overwhelmed at first because it means that we have to constantly engage with people outside UUM and professional people working as a mediator. Firstly when drafting the feedbacks, my team and I had to choose questions that are suitable for public people as they do not have knowledge about alternative dispute resolution at all. So, I had to be careful when choosing the questions. Sharing the survey questionnaires is challenging to me as not many people are interested to fill in surveys or have time for it. As we sent the survey to Whatsapp app group chats, some people choose to ignore our message. I was worried at first as we didn’t get much response on the survey. But as I started to approach people one by one and request them to fill in the survey, they were happy to help me so. Thus, in total, we managed to gain 41 respondents. As for the program, I was assigned to approach the speaker. For me, it is a challenging duty as I had to contact professional people. As a UUM student, I have the responsibility to show a good skills and professionalism when engaging with the lawyers or mediators. I was not confident to write them emails because I am lack of drafting skills and what if I am also lack of professionalism. Nevertheless, once I started drafting the emails, I got the rhythm and found the courage to email it to the respected speaker. I was so happy when the speaker and I were replying to each other’s emails as we also had an efficient communication. During the program day, I assisted the speaker to join the meeting app and thanked him for his willingness to be our speaker. I was very proud of myself on how I handled the speaker until the program ends.

Throughout the SL, I was able to recognize my strength and weaknesses. As for my strength, I believe I am very systematic in doing the assignment and tasks handed to me. I managed to brainstorm with my team mates on our steps to accomplish the assignment and was able to finish it on time. I am also good at working in a team as I am a flexible person. Throughout the whole assignment I ensure that we would discuss and brainstorm together to find solutions and outcomes. I also believe that I have good communication skill as I always make sure to communicate any problems and good news to the team.  As for my weaknesses, I find that I am lack of confidence and drafting skills. This can be seen when I had to approach the speaker through email. Since I rarely write professional emails, I was worried if I sound ridiculous to the recipient. However, since I started drafting the email slowly, and asking for another person to proofread, I finally had the courage to send the email and improved my drafting skill. In addition, I am also a perfectionist which makes me always stressing on whether my work is done right and perfectly or not and feel burnt out. Nonetheless, since we did the SL together and did our best, we managed to distribute the task efficiently and accomplished our goals. All in all, I believe that doing this SL has bring out the best in me in aspect of communication, and drafting. I see new skills and was able to extend my knowledge throughout the SL. I am proud of myself.

All in all, this assignment or course work has taught me a lot not only on what mediation on landlord and tenant disputes is, but also extended my skills on communication, drafting, critical thinking, and working in a team. Since our program was only between the speaker and our group member, I wish to conduct a program where there will be audience joining it. This is so I could learn how to organize a bigger program and handling more people. Overall, I am satisfied with the service learning and is thankful to my group mates and Dr. Ain Husna for their grace support.
